1995-1998 Nissan 240SX

Nissan 240SX

Pros :
- Excellent rear-wheel-drive handling.
- Can be easily and cheaply modified to make 300+ hp.

Cons :
- Not enough power from stock engine.
- Used models may be abused by boy racers.

The 240SX has an extremely capable rear-wheel-drive S14 platform that could shame some well-known sports cars in the handling department. But sadly, the U.S. version received a merely adequate 2.4L engine and comfort-oriented independent suspension.

However, the car is popular with tuners since the transmission can handle more than 300 hp, and performance parts are readily available. The car already shares parts with the Skyline and 300ZX. A popular modification is swapping the stock engine with the Japanese-market SR20DET 200+ hp turbocharged engine, turning this coupe into a real sports car. Being a popular engine, many are imported to the U.S. from Japan and are available very cheap at certain tuner shops. If you are lucky, you might find a car with the engine swap already done. Otherwise, if all you want is a fairly quick, great-handling RWD touring coupe, the stock-engined car is the one for you. It is available in various trims, such as base, LE and SE, although they all just differ in interior accessory options. In '97, the car got an aggressive front-end facelift, with new headlights and bumper.

The chassis and drivetrain are highly durable, and build quality is not an issue. Problems are basically non-existent, although it would be sensible to check if the car has been abused by an aggressive driver. Modified cars could also have reliability issues, unless you yourself tinker with cars and could fix minor problems, in which case this is not a problem.
