Toyota climbed back on top as the highest selling automobile company, knocking General Motors off the first spot.

2012 Toyota managed to go back to what to do best, and that is selling cars, increasing deliveries by 23 percent, which surged sales numbers to 9.75m units, which included subsidiaries Hino Motors and Daihatsu. GM came in second as they sold 9.29m units, with Volkswagen coming in third with 9.07m units.

Sales in the U.S. shot up 27 percent to 2.08m cars, which included Scion models as well, thereby seeing an increase in their market share increase from 12.9 percent to 14.4 percent. GM currently has a share of 17.9 percent U.S. market share. Japan also saw a significant increase, a 35 percent jump to sell 2.41m cars. Overall overseas sales added up to 7.33m cars, which is a 19% growth.

Toyota hopes to increase sales numbers to 9.91m cars this year, as the increased demand in the U.S. and weaking yen will help them compete better against South Korean brands, Hyundai and Kia.
