IIHS crash tests say sub-compacts less safe than expected

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, better known as the IIHS, conducted three front-to-front crash tests, each involving a sub-compact and a midsize model from the same manufacturer, to show how extra vehicle size and weight enhance occupant protection in collisions. The revealing results imply that very small cars generally can’t protect people in crashes as well as bigger cars, even if the small ones get top ratings in standardised crash tests against stationary barriers.
