Pontiac G8 may come back as Caprice U.S. police car

The Pontiac brand was made redundant as part of GM’s restructuring, effectively taking with it the class-leading Pontiac G8 that was based on the Australian Holden Commodore. GM spokesmen have announced that the G8 will not be coming back as a Chevrolet product, even though it continues to be sold as a Chevrolet in various foreign markets. But after Bob Lutz let slip that the G8 would come back as a new-generation Chevrolet Caprice, GM CEO Fritz Henderson has backtracked, saying that it might come back only as a police vehicle.
Apparently priority is being given to the idea that the Holden rear-wheel-drive model could be sold as a U.S. police fleet vehicle only, as a direct competitor to the Ford Crown Victoria and the Dodge Charger. There are no plans to move production to the GM’s Canadian Camaro plant, so the cars would have to be imported from Australia.
It opens up the possibility that civilians can still buy them after the police car are decommissioned in future years, assuming the Caprice 9C1 police special makes a return.
However, a week later, GM chiefs Lutz and Fritz both denied that the car has any chance of coming here.
