New 2009 Mini Cooper convertible unveiled

The latest generation of the Mini convertible will finally be released at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. This 2009 model will of course be based on the 2nd-generation Mini Cooper that was launched back in 2007.

The Mini Cooper convertible is powered by a 118 hp 1.6L 4-cylinder engine, while the Mini Cooper S convertible is powered by a 172 hp 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, both mated to a 6-speed manual or automatic. The European-market version gets BMW’s ‘EfficientDynamics’ features such as brake regeneration and stop-start function, although these will not make it to America. Dynamic Traction Control with Electronically Differential Lock Control enhances traction under acceleration, and is available as an option or as part of the Sport Package.

In terms of convertible-specific features, the new model now has hidden rear-tailgate hinges, while the rear roll hoops are now hidden and only pop up during a rollover accident. The soft top can retract in only 15 seconds, at speeds of up to 20 mph. It can be partially opened, like a sunroof, at speeds of up to 60 mph. Frontal airbags and head/thorax airbags are standard. Other features include a useless “openometer” gauge that measures the amount of time that you’ve had the top down.
