European gets own Volt with Opel Ampera

Opel, GM’s European arm, has revealed its own version of the Chevy Volt, calling it the Opel Ampera. While the play on the name is hilarious, what is more interesting is the Ampera, just like the Volt, claims an electric-only range of 37 miles, with a total range of 310 miles aided by a small petrol engine.

The ‘prototype’ Opel Ampera will be launched at the 2009 Geneva Auto Show. The only difference is the Volt uses a 110V socket and the Ampera will use a 220V one.

Why do Europeans repeatedly get upgraded, edgier, sportier and certainly more futuristic versions of vehicles? When will automanufacturers design cars that keep the same styles and names from country to country? It makes me sick: I ALWAYS prefer the international versions of our cars. Is anyone else with me?
