Chinese Geely GE blatantly clones Rolls Royce Phantom

The most notorious launch at the recently-concluded 2009 Shanghai Auto Show was the Geely GE, a car so blatantly cloning its source material that Rolls Royce considered suing the Chinese outfit for trademark infringement.

The Rolls-Royce Phantom clone is a rear-wheel-drive car powered by a 3.5L V6 putting out 278 hp and 251 lb-ft of torque. Though considered a big car by Chinese standards, even at 17.5 feet in length, it is still 1.8 feet shorter than the Phantom.

The cloned bits include the grille, the oblong profile, the tail lamps, and even the “starlight” headliner. But the most original feature has to be in the rear seat. There is only one big chair to seat a single villainous boss.

The Geely GE could become a big hit in its home country, offering the looks of a dictator’s ride for about the equivalent of $44,000.
