Chevrolet Volt working prototype hits the road

The General Motors Pre-Production operations center at the Warren, MI Tech Center has finished work on the first of 75 “integration” prototypes of the Chevrolet Volt. The first car was completed a week ahead of schedule, and it is already on the streets undergoing tests.

The integration prototypes aren’t fully built-up cars like the production version will be, but they are the most functional yet. Chief engineer Andrew Farah took IVER #1 (Integration Vehicle Engineering Release #1) out for a brief drive after it was completed and checked out. It looks like the 2011 launch will be on schedule. Whether it “saves” GM from the clutches of the government remains to be seen.
