Once a brake problem slowed McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton, Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel had no competition in Sunday evening’s inaugural day/night race. A brilliant win cemented his second place in the drivers’ world championship behind Brawn GP’s Jenson Button, who enlivened the end of the race with a superb challenge to the second-placed Red Bull of Mark Webber in the closing stages. Button wins F1 title as Webber wins Brazil GP

Jenson Button took the limelight at the 2009 Brazilian Grand Prix. After 60 of the 71 laps, as Mark Webber swept to a dominant victory for Red Bull ahead of BMW Sauber’s Robert Kubica and a fighting Lewis Hamilton, he had done enough. And a late puncture for Brawn GP team mate Rubens Barrichello, which elevated him to fifth, was merely the icing on the cake. Continue reading »

LeMans team builds Acura racecar on video

About 42 hours after Highcroft Acura driver Scott Sharp walked away from a crash during practice for the Petit Le Mans racing event, a freshly-built Acura ARX-02a was rolled out for the morning warmup on Saturday. The Highcroft crew put in marathon sessions of work, totaling 20 hours, to build a brand new racecar, as LeMans teams do not generally have a backup car. A spare carbon-fiber tub was picked up from the Honda Performance Development shop in California and shipped, while the crew at the Atlanta racetrack salvaged 10% of the old parts for use in the new car. The car was ready to race in less than two days, and finished 6th in the rain-shortened race. Continue reading »

Kimi wins for Ferrari at 2009 Belgian F1 GP

In what has to be the most random podium finishes of the season, Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen became the sixth different victor in six races, and his first for 2009, with a closely-fought success in Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix, in which his KERS system played a crucial role in the opening stages. Interestingly, regular loser Force-India came in second, after the team’s Giancarlo Fisichella took pole in qualifying. Continue reading »
