All-new 2010 Ford Mustang debuts

The 2010 Ford Mustang has been revealed, moving the pony car upscale to eliminate many of its deficiencies and help it better compete with the upcoming Chevy Camaro.

The most obvious changes over the previous version are the new thinner grille with smaller headlights. Also new are redesigned airdams for better cooling, reshaped tail and a stunning new interior. The base V6 gets a different front bumper compared to the GT V8 one with integrated grille foglights.

There are many funky new features. Each bar of the taillights now light up one at a time when the indicators are turned on. An optional interior lighting package allows the driver to change the color of the gauges, while the door sills have a back-lit “Mustang” logo. Ford’s capless fuel-filler system is now standard on the Mustang. Ford’s SYNC multimedia system is also available. And the traction control button features a “Mustang” horse logo. Pressing that button disables the now-standard stability control system.

Most of the interior materials are apparently now soft to the touch, unlike the previous generation’s cheap hard plastics.

New seats, dashboard and center console round out the cabin refurbishment.

Sadly, mechanical changes are rather limited. The base version features the same old 210 hp 4.0L V6 with 240 lb-ft of torque. The Mustang GT gets the previous Bullitt version’s 315 hp 4.6L V8 engine with 325 lb-ft of torque. Both are available with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic. For now, there is no GT500 model.

The Mustang’s outdated suspension carries over from the outgoing model, with lower control arms up front and a live axle at the rear. Of course, the engineers have tuned the springs and added new shocks to offer sporty handling. The V6 Mustang now has standard 17-inch alloy wheels with 18-inch optional, while the GT has 18-inch standard and 19-inch optional.

The Mustang will be available in coupe or convertible body styles. A panoramic glass roof will be optional on the coupe.

The new Ford Mustang is going to get 315hp and 325tq out of a 4.6L V8 while the new Nissan/Infinity is getting 330hp and close to 300tq from a 3.7 V6. Does anyone see an inefficiency problem with the Mustang’s power out put?
