2001 Honda Civic & Accord NHTSA airbag recall

American Honda is recalling all Civic and Accord cars from the 2001 model year. Apparently the driver’s airbag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure. So if an affected airbag deploys, the increased internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture.
According to the NHTSA, metal fragments could pass through the air bag cushion material, possibly causing injury to passengers.
Under the recall, dealers will replace the airbag inflator free of charge. The Japanese manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification schedule, but owners may contact Honda at 1-800-999-1009.
